What are Twinks?
A twink is a gay slang term used to describe a young or young-looking man with a slender, toned body and minimal body hair. The term is used in both homosexual and heterosexual contexts, and can be derogatory or affirming depending on the user.
History of the Term «Twink»
The term twink is first recorded in print in the June 1971 issue of Drummer magazine in the personal ads section. In 1979, it was documented in use in New York City’s gay bar scene. One popular bar for twinks during this time was the Spike on West 19th Street in Manhattan.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, twinks were not as visible as they are today, but they were certainly present in the underground gay party and sex club scene. In 1988, a group of twinks calling themselves the «Twink Patrol» began to patrol the Stonewall Inn, a bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village that was popular with the gay community. The Twink Patrol would harass and bully anyone they deemed to be «too femme» or «not twinky enough.»
The term twink has also been used in the straight porn industry to describe young, attractive male performers. However, this use of the term is controversial, as many people believe that it objectifies and demeans gay men.
Today, twinks are more visible than ever before, thanks in part to the rise of social media and the increased visibility of the LGBT community. There are numerous popular twinks on Tumblr, Instagram, and Twitter, and many of them have become famous in their own right.
While the term twink is still used as a derogatory term by some, it is also used as a badge of honor by many young gay men. Whether you love them or hate them, there’s no denying that twinks are here to stay.
